Every household object eventually becomes important to a cat, but in Ellie’s world there is one device that stands above all others: the Automatic Feeder. In Ellie’s mind, it is not merely a machine. It is a magical box that occasionally sings and then produces food. Naturally, this makes it the most fascinating invention ever created by humans.
The feeder makes a small whirring noise right before it dispenses a portion of kibble. The moment that sound begins, Ellie appears out of nowhere. She could be in the living roon, asleep on the bed, gazing out the window, or pretending not to care about food at all. But the instant that feeder chirps, she launches into a full-speed sprint toward the bathroom like a tiny striped rocket.
If the feeder has already dispensed her snack for the moment, Ellie does the next most logical thing: she sits next to it and waits. Patiently. Very patiently. In her mind, if food came out once, it could obviously happen again at any moment. She will sit beside the feeder with laser focus, staring at it as if she can mentally convince it to produce another helping.
Of course, the feeder must occasionally be refilled, and that is when things get truly exciting. The moment the lid opens, Ellie suddenly becomes extremely interested in “helping.” By helping, we mean attempting to stick her entire head into the hopper before the lid can close again. Apparently, eating directly from the source is the ultimate feline dream.
Despite Ellie’s enthusiasm for the magical food machine, the automatic feeder has actually been a wonderful tool for keeping her healthy. It carefully portions out her meals throughout the day, helping keep her weight in check while making sure she always knows when her next snack is coming.
That schedule is especially important for Ellie. Before she found her forever home, she had been abandoned in an apartment and went without food for a time. Experiences like that can leave cats with a bit of food insecurity. Knowing that meals arrive regularly helps her feel safe and secure.
So yes, Ellie may sprint across the house every time the feeder whirs. She may stare at it like it’s a sacred relic. And she may attempt the occasional head-first dive into the hopper during refill time. But if a magical kibble machine helps our little rescue cat feel safe and happy, we are more than happy to keep it humming.
Besides, watching Ellie race to the feeder like she just won the feline lottery is one of the most entertaining parts of the day.
